Welcome to SETI-Linux

Note

This site is now depreciated. Most of the information related to BOINC/SETI which has now been replaced by SETI-Enhanced. This site will remain as an historical reference. For more up to date information, readers are referred to Simon Zadra's excellent site.

Please check out my new site, www.pendre.co.uk, offering IT consultancy in Pembrokeshire. We specialize in spam-free email hosting and other custom Linux solutions.

This site is primarily focused on providing guides (HOWTO's) on compiling and optimizing SETI and BOINC clients for Linux. Optimized BOINC and SETI clients for Linux are available for download for various different processor architectures. In addition, a detailed guide on how to compile your own optimized BOINC client or SETI client for Linux is provided. A number of Linux tutorials are also available and more will be available in due course. Currently a guide on how to dual boot Windows and Linux is provided using various different methods. A number of older guides for SETI classic are also provided.

Harold Naparst has recently entered the frey of SETI optimizers (welcome Harold!). He is currently doing some excellent work and has produced some stunningly fast optimized clients for Linux. This is currently a work in progress and new clients are appearing almost daily. Linux users should definately check out the clients available on his website for the latest developments.

Tetsuji "Maverick" Rai's optimized BOINC clients for Windows have been added to the downloads section.

The Athlon XP SETI client has been updated to version 4.07.3b. Tweaks to the SIMD optimizations have given further performance increases.

23/06/2005

A new SETI client for P3 (V4.07.3a) has been added. This, much to my surprise, remains faster than Metod or TMR's ICC/IPP clients for Pentium 3 CPUs.

We have now been linked by the official Berkeley BOINC site as a download source of BOINC and Seti@Home client software.

A new AMD64 SETI client (V4.07.3a) has been added. This is a 32-bit client that will run on both 64-bit and 32-bit Linux installations. The 64-bit compiler still appears broken for the time being. The i686 and Athlon XP clients will also be updated this weekend to V4.07.3a incorporating a minor bug fix.

Windows versions of optimized BOINC and SETI clients are now available for download

Tetsuji "Maverick" Rai's optimized SETI and BOINC clients for Windows are now available from the downloads section.

Metod has kindly added some benchmark times for our SETI clients to his site. The i686 client benchmarks extremely well on P3 systems and FalconFly has benchmarked on AMD based systems. Please take a moment to drop by and take a look.

A new 64-bit AMD64 (x86-64) BOINC client (v4.19.3) is now available. We are having some problems with the new 64-bit SETI client with initial testing showing it to be slower than the current version. However, the new 32-bit Athlon-XP client is blisteringly fast on AMD64 systems (approx +65%) so we are currently recommending that all AMD64 owners use this client.

New improved revisions of optimized BOINC and SETI clients are now available for download

We now have newly revised optimized BOINC and SETI client available for Athlon XP and generic i686 (AMD64 (x86-64) versions will follow shortly). The new BOINC clients are our third revision, based on Berkeley's v4.19, and are numbered v4.19.3 accordingly. Benchmark performance has increased by approximately +20% and +13% for i686 and Athlon XP clients, respectively, over our last release. The SETI clients are our third revision, based on Berkeley's v4.07, and are numbered v4.07.3 accordingly. Performance has again risen to approximately +41% and +59% for the i686 and Athlon XP clients, respectively, over Berkeley's native Linux client. Get them now from the downloads section.

We now have optimized SETI client available for Athlon XP, AMD64 (x86-64) and generic i686. These clients are significantly faster than the native Linux client due to the use of highly optimized Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) routines. Get them now from the downloads section.

General site update, updated some dead links. A new stable release of BOINC for Linux is expected soon and optimized versions will be available shortly afterwards.

30/01/2005

Added an optimized AMD K6 BOINC client for Linux to the downloads section.

28/01/2005

New Optimized version 4.19 of the BOINC clients for Linux are now available from the downloads section. In addition to the previous V4.13 clients, optimized versions for AMD K6-2 and K6-3 processor architectures have been added. Please note I have not thoroughly tested these clients yet so use at your own risk - but enjoy!

26/01/2005

A new version of the BOINC client has now been released by Berkeley. I hope to have the new versions of the optimized BOINC clients for Linux available at the weekend once I've had time to compile and test them.

18/12/2004

Added a new page detailing the benchmark and credit system used by BOINC and SETI@Home.

18/12/2004

Added some links to other clients for BOINC to the downloads section, including clients for Athlon 64 (x86-64), Solaris/x86, SPARC64 and Mac OS X. Also added improved notes on processor architecture identification and selecting the correct optimized client for your processor.

26/11/2004

The site has finally had it's new design layout applied. I've been trying to learn some CSS and this is my first attempt - so be gentle with it and don't break it!

24/11/2004

Optimized AMD K6-2 BOINC client for Linux added to the downloads section.

19/11/2004

Newly optimized BOINC clients were added. These clients were compiled with gcc-3.4.2 which gave significant speed improvements to benchmark results compared to previous versions compiled using gcc-3.3.3. The initial dynamically linked versions were replaced by the current statically linked versions to help increase compatibility with a wider range of Linux distributions. Check out the Downloads section for access to these clients.
